The sails are experimental ones made from Tyvek as the owner/builder Peter Lord was experimenting with changes to the sail plan.  Apart from the carbon fibre yard which proved to be too flexible and twisted off too much, he was very pleased with the result.  All the carbon fibre spars as well as the sails were designed and home made by Peter.  Once the yard is stiffened, Peter is indulging himself with a professionally made suit of sails for 2008.

Many thanks to both Ville Lindfors and Wojtek Baginski for their kindness in allowing me to use their photos.

As a reminder, here is the original 4 plank Apple without tumblehome transom and with the standard all-weather rig of  large main and small mzzen [though with the tall mizzen mast of the light weather rig], and open cockpit.  Reducing the size of the open cockpit is advisable for open water: with the Swedish Apple 'Vips' there are short side seats with tanks under and a full width stern tank - the Austrian Reinhard Apple cutter layout has a different example of this, whilst the slightly wider American Apple is different again.  Peter's mizzen  - of his own design - is closer in area to the original Apple's light weather rig.  He has also increased the length of the foot of the main in front of the mast.  There are many other differences, too, from the increased width of the inner gunwale set on spacer blocks to the adjustable stretcher bearers on the floor and the dual rowing positions.
